Jack-Of-All-Trades
Working with Huang Feng, he would soon come into his own as one of their top martial-arts Choreographers and later as a Director (and one of the best). He picked up an eye for detail that could rivals that of famed Shaw Bros' director Liu Chia-Liang, in that, he helps to educate the audience on things that they would have either miss or just didn't understand. These two men, would eventually go "toe-to-toe" in Hung's excellent film Pedicab Driver. Samo became instrumental in helping his friends find work at Golden Harvest (Yuen Wah would go on to be a contract player (stuntman) at Shaw Bros' at one time). If you'll watch Enter The Dragon closely you'll see him and most of his now famous friends.
Huang Feng wrote the first film Hung ever directed, Iron-Fisted Monk, and Hung would later have him produce his Independent film The Victim. Throughout his career at Golden Harvest, he has helped to establish the company as a premiere force in the film industry. Sure, Raymond Chow called the shots, but it was Hung who was giving films credibility with excellent fight scenes, constantly bringing in new people to meet this end. He's helped to further the careers of people like Cassanova Wong, Yuen Biao, Lam Ching-Ying , John Liang, and many others, while trying to maintain his own career. |
He's had partnerships in major film companies such as Gar Bo Films (with Karl Maka and Liu Chia-Yung), D & B Films with millionaire Dickson Poon (Michelle Yeoh's ex-husband), as well as Bo Ho Films, his own and the most successful of the three. He has given the genre such classics as Warriors 2, The Prodigal Son, Encounter Of The Spooky Kind, and Eastern Condors, while producing countless other films that would go on to become classics in themselves such as The Dead & The Deadly and Operation Scorpio. He has done just about everything a person can do in the industry Stuntman, Extra, Choreographer, Director, Producer to (eventually) having his own successful television series here, in American (Martial Law).
This short-lived series let many who had never heard of him experience his masterful skills on a weekly basis. If you were to take away his contributions to the genre, you'd take away everything from Angela Mao to Jackie Chan, thus leaving a tremendous void that would be impossible to fill. It would be accurate to say that he helped build Golden Harvest from the ground up and we (fans) have had the pleasure of watching him spread his "Midas Touch" on just about everything he's been a part of. He is, without a doubt, one of the biggest contributors of the kung-fu genre over the past (30+) years.
