The Supreme Swordsman
Along with Liu Chia-Liang, this man has changed the face of the kung fu genre, as we know it. They were the main choreographers for the Shaw bros. studios for quite a while (from 1964 - 1974) adding their own flavor to martial arts cinema. The top student of Yuen Hsiao-Tien (father of the Yuen Clan and Jackie Chan's master in the Snake In The Eagle's Shadow), he helped make some kung-fu classics stand out from the rest of the pack, by infusing real kung-fu into the storylines. He and Liu Chia-Liang use to receive $3,000 (split (2) ways) to choreograph blockbuster-hits for Shaw Bros' studios.
Ti Lung was a favorite of this director and he would use him to great lengths in the Shaw Bros. movies that he made (choreographed) with him, as well as starring him in (2) of his films after he started doing his own films. The best example of this is in the classic - Opium & The Kung Fu Master, where Tang Chia has a role himself, playing Ti Lung's teacher. But his contributions to kung fu cinema should always be recognized as the groundwork for future films on kung fu, because he is definitely one of kung-fu's greatest allies and contributors. ' |
Though he'd only directed (3) films for Shaw studios, he was the "Martial-Arts Director" (m.a.d.) on countless films for them, working extensively with director Chu Yuan on most of his Swordplay films. He was also instrumental in getting choreography jobs and stunt work for the Yuen Clan. Actor (and former stuntman) Yuen Chung-Yan would work with him a great deal choreographing various films and learning a trade that has aided him even until this day, working on such films as Daredevil and the Charlie's Angels film series. His work as a Martial-arts choreographer, has aided all those who have come in contact with him. In the long run, we've all gained from his experience and martial knowledge.
