As one of Hong Kong's most respected directors, this man of many talents always seems to have his plate full (over-flowing). Coming from a family of acrobatic-geniuses, he is the one with the keen eye for mind-blowing choreography (his brother Yuen Chung-Yan is the other one), and excellent directing. Movies like Secret Rivals-2, Invincible Armor, and Drunken Master are some brilliant examples of his work.
He helped resurrect the film careers of superstars Jackie Chan (Snake In The Eagle's Shadow) Jet Li (Fist Of Legends) and launched the career of others - Donnie Yen (Drunken Tai-Chi). A fine example of his work with these (2) kung-fu stars can be seen in the classic - Once Upon A Time In China-2. It seems his choreography has graced so many movies and made them more than what the scripts could have ever asked for. His movies always bring out the best in the actors, the choreography, and the overall productions of the films that he works on. Working with his brothers, he even found time to script some vehicles that showcased their talents as well. Dance Of The Drunken Mantis, Shaolin Drunkard, Dreadnaught, and The Buddhist Fist are just a few of the films that have brought his brothers (as well as himself) critical acclaim in the film world and throughout Hong Kong. Though a lot of their films have over-the-top Comedic performances, the mind-boggling choreography is always one of the most anticipated portions of their films. |
He's work at both Shaw Bros' and Golden Harvest, so he has a very good perspective of both studios, and he has had winning ways working with each one. So in tune and comfortable with choreographing fight scenes, he's stated that he works out action sequences in his head and just let's his actors work out the details. His movies always put people in theater seats, and his contribution to martial-arts cinema has set new standards (The Matrix series), that others must now follow.
