His Brother’s Keeper
He has been one of the genre's most hidden secrets, while being highly visible, in a very popular genre. He has worked with just about everyone who's become a star, throughout the whole of the genre. Being the brother of one of the top choreographers in the business (Liu Chia-Liang), has afforded him a lot of work, but he's always seemed to do just fine, in making a name for himself. His brother always seemed to be at odds with his stars, arguing with everyone one from Chen Kuan-Tai to Billy Chong. Yet, his manner is a lot different than Liu's, in that he's gotten along well with just about everyone, who's worked with him.
Like his brother, he started out as a stuntman. He was actually, one of the top stuntmen in the business, appearing in countless films from everything as a villainous henchman, to "Doubling" for a number of actors. Long before his brother was the star of a film, he appeared in the cult-classic, The Inheritor Of Kung Fu (aka God Wears A Blackbelt). He was one of the 1st martial-artists that I've seen, that used the 3-Sectional Nunchakus, with Liang Shao-Hua ( Kung Fu Massacre), being another one. Valley Of The Fangs to 5 Fingers Of Death (King Boxer) Chen Kuan-Tai (The Iron Bodyguard), Ti Lung (The Delightful Forest), David Chiang ( ) |
After having worked with his brother on Jimmy Wang-Yu's Master Of The Flying Guillotine, he worked of Tiger & Crane Fist, Point The Finger Of Death, and The Deadly Silver Spear; with each film, raising the actor's profile, at a time, when his star was fading. His extensive choreography helped to make a star out of Meng Fei, when he was just starting out. Films such as - King Of Boxers, The Young Tiger, The Prodigal Boxer, Enter The Whirlwind Boxer (Prodigal Boxer-2), - his work on previous films with the actor, obviously lead to him being casted to replace CKT in Chang's -- 5 Shaolin Masters.
After the Liu Brothers left Chang's camp, they worked on The Ming Patriots and Secrets Of The Shaolin Poles; helping to secure Meng Fei's future status within the genre. The two men would later appear together, in Shaolin King Boxer - with both Liu and Meng, looking like Fong Sze-Yu character, that the actor had made famous.
He's always had a better relationship with Chang Cheh, than his brother. Heroes Shed No Tears, for John Woo - is a prime example. His brother was nowhere to be found, as anyone who's worked with Chang, had showed up to show their support.
Working on his brother's films, he helped to add more flair to them, with his stunning expertise.
