What It Did For His Career
There was no doubt that he'd end up playing villains - just one look at his face and you knew, that you had to keep an eye on him. He was one of the characters, that no matter how they tried to pour on the charm, you just knew, he couldn't be trusted. While, he's played a number of villainous roles, he's been more cunning, than he has been (down right) evil. One of his first notices, came in the film - Magnificent Trio, as one of the crooks, who was trying to make a name for himself (along with a lot of cash).
Later films like Mission Impossible, gave him ample room, to show just how evil, he could be. Whether it was in Swordplay films (Come Drink With Me) of early kung-fu classics (2 Graves Of Kung Fu), he always put on a good performance. It was during the latter film, that he began this habit of running his fingers through his hair (from front-to-back), that somehow, became his Trademark. I remember him doing this move a lot in the film - The Great Hunter - even in his death-scene.
Evil Quotient - 5
I thought his portrayal in On The Waterfront, was one of the most dispicable parts, he's ever played. His lust for a certain woman was so bad, that he went to great lengths to rape her. The brutal way he used those Pins against her, was as ingenius, as it was sick. As far as "Fight-scenes" go, this was one of the Bloodiest ones I've seen (in an early 70's film).

What It Did For His Career
Even when he played Good guys, they always seemed to be - right on the edge - from being Bad (psychotic). So, when he finally decided to cross that line and play villains, it wasn't much of a stretch for him. While, he flaucuated between good and bad guy roles early on in his career, he began to lean more towards villainous roles in the mid-70's with such films as - Thou Shalt Not Kill, But Once and The Handcuffs.
In the film - Bruce Li, the Invincible; he was such a terror, that when a guy caught him in bed with his wife, he (and his friends) decided to let him finish, because they might have a better chance at beating him, once his strength was sapped. It didn't work, because once he finished with her, he finished them off as well. He's always played his characters with such tenacity, that you'd really have to be at the top of your game, to offer him any serious competition.
He seemed to find his Evil-side, in the film Martial Arts (also known as The Chinese Mack). This film showed his slow transition, into a bad character. At first, he was the "Chivalrous" hero, helping those in need. Later, when he's sent away to find success, he does so, with the aid of a scrupulous female. She breaks down his reservations, about using his fight-skill for evil (profit) and he eventually, loses sight of his reason for learning martial-arts, in the first place.
Later, in Sun Chung's Judgement Of An Assassin, he plays a hired killer, with a scary presence and (almost) invincible fighting-skill. He battled Ti Lung in a number of films. Unforgiven Of Shaolin, had him wanting to eridicate Shaolin and all of its' disciples and in The Master Strikes Back, he dispised Ti Lung (and the way he wanted to clean up the town) so much, that he began taking it out on his son. In Wong Ching's Mercenaries From Hong Kong, money ruled the day and he began trying to kill off his friends.
Yet, most remember him best from Super Ninjas, as the evil leader of the "5 Elements Ninjas" - who were hired by one clan, to kill a rival clan and its' members. Once this is done, he decides to take over the whole Martial World. Here, he was at his best and showed no remorse for anything he did (no matter how many people he killed).

What It Did For His Career
Started out as a Good-guy. Cool, Calm, and Intellectual - He wasn't one to kill, just for killing's sake. He always uses reasoning before he kills.
Always wore fancy garmets and General's robes.
When most people think of Chang Yi, they're immediately reminded of his perfomance in the film - Eagle's Claws, as the maniaical Mantis-fist expert (complete with Pointed-hat and curled-up boots).
While, he doesn't possess the incredible fighting skills (i.e., fancy kicks) of many of his contemporaries, like Lo Lieh - Intensity and tenacity, are what has made him a fan favorite for years.

What It Did For His Career
I first remember him, in the film The Chinese Mack. Here, he was one of the "3 Tigers" - a trio of vicious bandits, that used to be buddies with Mr. Shin (a former bandit, himself). While traveling, they ran out of money and stopped by for some cash, only to start wrecking his home, instead. Then, he was quick and to-the-point, when it came to fighting. A good friend of CWM - worked with him often.
