Biography
Another Shaw Bros' contract player, who has quite a few movies under his belt. He was one of the many, in director Chang Cheh's stable of up & coming actors. Chang stated, that he couldn't take credit for his rise in the film industry, because the films that he direct him in, didn't have him as the main star. While he did have a prominent role in Chang's film - The Savage 5, he would normally be found in the background of his hit films (Blood Brothers, The Water Margin, and The Brave Archer). He was even cast, as Bruce Lee in Bruce Lee - His Last Days & Nights, one of his early starring roles. He showed decent skills, yet was not in the same league as most known stars at that time (when it came to kung-fu fighting), but, I thought he did a pretty good job.
He probably gave his best showings in The 8 Escorts and King Of Fists & Dollars, in which he showed some pretty good fighting skills. He (even) got to show his dark side, in a villainous role, that appeared to suit him, well. Seems that nowadays, you can find him at the other end of a gun (you pick the end), arresting someone, shooting, or being shot. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 90's thriller Bunman: The Untold Story (which was based on a true story), about a crazed killer, who chops people up, cooks them, and makes pork-buns out of them. It was a smash hit and he (still) receives praise for it. He is one of few 70's stars, who (actually) made the transition from Kung-fu film to Modern-day Action films. One of his best performances, was in The Killer, starring Chow Yun-Fat and directed by John Woo.
