Biography

Like most, he started out as a Shaw Brothers' extra - later, settling in as a contract player, for Golden Harvest. He's definitely paid his dues on the silver-screen, having appeared in some timeless classics. Yet, it was in Bruce Lee's Fists Of Fury (The Big Boss), that he first became a recognizable face, to most kung-fu fans. This led to a few leading roles, though (I'm sure) he probably could have handled more. He could have been transformed into a star, after his role in The Shanghai Killers, but, he got overshadowed by the popularity of Lee and Angela Mao.

This didn't mean that he couldn't act, as he has given us some very good performances. His fighting, never quite matched his acting, which is probably, one of the reasons, he seemed to get mostly 3rd-rate parts, as opposed to leading ones (remember, we're talking about Kung-fu films here and fighting is the key). Though, I really liked him in The Dragon Tamers, as he got to display his skills and his intensity, he was still overshadowed by most of the film's other stars, including Carter Wong.

A little "Scrapper" (intense fighting in all directions), just barely got saved from the Scrap Heap, in the fighting department. He gave an excellent showing, as the villain in the film The Bone-Crushing Kid and gained a few more points in Jackie Chan's Dragon Fist. His fighting skills were pretty good, but, when he began starring in films with more talented martial-artists (The Prodigal Son and The Hand Of Death), you could really tell the difference. He was (later) regulated to mostly, acting roles, where he occasionally, lent his talents. He retired from films, in the late 1990's.
