Biography
Originally, he was cast as a Heroic lead, but his Sinister looks, kept landing him bad guy roles. He's mainly starred in a lot of films with his friend Jimmy Wang Yu, with The Great Hunter and Trail Of The Broken Blade, being standout roles. Most of his best work as an actor came during his early years with Shaw Bros' and after that he just couldn't seem to compete with the more talented crop of '70s martial-arts stars. Actually, he didn't have to as his career behind the camera started to take off.
He started directing movies Kissed By The Wolves, Cloud Romance, 2 Graves Of Kung Fu, and Bone-Crushing Kid (giving Liu Chia-Yung and Chin Lung their first starring roles). His roles in kung-fu films still kept him quite busy, as he was one of the more seasoned actors in the business. He was able to secure roles in both martial-arts and modern settings. He, himself, enjoyed above-average roles in such films as - The Cannibals, Fearless Fighters, and Duel Of Karate - one of his earlier film roles (as a hero).

One of his most obscure roles (an a personal favorite of mine), was his role in On The Waterfront. Here, he displayed one of his more vicious (and bloody) performances. Rumored to have been kidnapped in real life during the early 80's, and it was said that his friend Jimmy Wang-Yu (with reported Triad connections) was the one who saved him. I don't know, that kind of sounds a little staged if you ask me, you know how actors try to draw attention to themselves when their careers hit the skids. But, true or not, he has made his contribution to the kung-fu genre, an interesting one.
