Biography
With such a stirring performance in Once Upon A Time In China battling Jet Li, you almost wondered, Where in the hell, did this guy came from ? He's been playing villains since the 60's, showing up in countless Shaw Bros' movies and he has definitely paid his dues. He's a favorite of the Yuen Clan and they use him as a villain, whenever possible. Was said to have been a Monk from China, but I think that's a load of crap, because I've seen him in movies where he was just starting out and his skills would have had him in trouble, with any of your favorite villains.
But growing up around & working with the Yuens probably gave him the skills that he possesses today, because he's definitely a capable villain with either fist or foot. In Kid From Kwangtung showed us skills he seemed to have been hiding. His battle with Wang Jang-Li, was definitely one of the film's highlights. In the over-the-top The Master Strikes, he was in top villain form, double-crossing everyone he came in contact with (he finale of this film makes up for all the insane Comedy).
He has worked with just about everyone in the business that was a star during the Kung Fu era. And, now, it he has made the transition to New Wave Kung Fu films (90's fare shoot with an abundance of Wire-work), one of the best being Iron Monkey with Donnie Yen. I, personally, liked him in Kick Boxer with Yuen Biao, but it seems that whomever he's up against, he's a fighter who can hang with the best of them (and has).
