Kwan Tak-Hing

Biography
He made is film debut in 1933 under the stage name "Sun Lang-Chow" -- known [then] as an Opera singer, having had formal training in Cantonese opera. During the Sino-Japanese war, he organized a theatrical troupe to entertain the Chinese fighter on the front-lines. This resulted in the Japanese placing a $40,000 bounty on his head, for his immediate capture.
After the war, he gained more exposure portraying China's most famous hero - Wong Fei-Hung. He starred in (98) films and (13) television episodes as the legenadry figure and became so acquainted with the character, that for years people never called him by his real name.
His portrayals were so convincing, that Wong Fei-Hung's real-life wife told him that he was exactly like her late husband -- right down to his mannerisms. He was a person who gave his all, in everything that he undertook.

When he took up the Chinese art of Calligraphy (which he wrote as he fought against Li Hai-Sheng in Magnificent Butcher), he studied the "Lam Chi-Yun" temple script for (6) months. He would then study the script-style of "Cheung Yuk-Wai" for (2) years, gaining such expertise that his writings were worth around $10,000 (Chinese Dollars). A fan of Western films, during a trip to San Francisco in 1932, he was given an 18-foot Bull Whip as a gift, during an acting tour there.
He became so intrigued with the weapon, that he practised in his basement for (14) months and became so good with the weapon, that he once was able to extinguished (104) of (110) candles with the tip of the whip. He practiced Northern Shaolin kung-fu and was famous for his Staff, as well as his "Shadowless" whip. A very religious man, when his mother died, he mourned for (49) days and abstained any physical contact from his wife for (7) years (4-years more than he had to).
Aside from the Wong Fei-Hung series, he was best known for filmss like Deadnaught, The Magnificent Kick, and my favorite, The Skyhawk. He was something of a philanthropist, and dedicated much of his time to helping the elderly and the sick (much like the hero he was on the screen). When he passed away in the early hours of June 27th, 1996 -- he in some ways, slipped further into Immortality. He will not soon be forgotten.
