Type-Casted
This section let's us see those actors who, when you see them on the screen, you automatically associate them with a certain part in any film. They've played these parts so often, that they, literally, own that role.
Working Around The Dead (Wong Yu)
He always seems to have a job at a Funeral or a Coffin Shop
Some Of The Best:
- Young Avenger
- Lion VS Lion
- Spiritual Boxer-2
- Dirty Kung Fu +
Con Artist (Wong Yu)
He is, undoubtedly, the best when it comes to playing the small-time conman, who is more of a "Trickster", than a crook. In these films, it's his duty to try and swindle people out of their valuables, but, unlike most, he always shows compassion in the end. He, usually, only knows enough kung-fu, to get him by and has to resort to using his "wits", to get out of the various predicaments that he finds (constantly) himself in. He set the stage for other actors who followed him such as Jimmy Liu, Yuen Biao, and Meng Yuen-Men. In the film He Has Nothing But Kung Fu, he shows Gordon Liu, just how he's developed in craft (of Stealing) into an art form.
Some Of The Best:
- Dirty Ho
- Spiritual Boxer
- Dirty Kung Fu
- Roar Of The Lion
- Young Avenger
- Kid With A Tattoo
- He Has Nothing But Kung Fu
Cruel Leader (Ku Feng)
Some Of The Best:
- Avenging Eagle
- Wandering Swordsman
- Flying Guillotines-2

- The Kung Fu Instructor
- Secret Service Of The Imperial Court
Double Crosser (Lu Feng)
Some Of The Best:
- Wang Jang-Li
- Tien Feng
- Ku Feng
- Wang Hsia
- Pai Ying
Drunken Master (Yuen Hsiao-Tien)
In Heroes From The East, he even hinted that the best technique out of all Kung-fu styles was "Drunken God"
Films that showcase this:
- Drunken Master
- Sleeping Fist
- 6 Directions Of Boxing ***
- Dance Of The Drunken Mantis
- Drunken Arts, Crippled Fists
- Story Of Drunken Master
- World Of The Drunken Master
- Kung Fu Master Named Drunken Cat
Favorite Kid (Huang I-Lung)
Try only kid. For the most part, all the really "juicy" kid rolls were taken by him. While "Yu Lung", star of many earlier films including Blood Of The Dragon, was a decent actor, Huang I-Lung, had a much larger following. This was due to the fact that he was a better actor/comedian and was an excellent acrobat (which enabled him to get "fighting" roles). He starred in a number of roles that could have easily gone to "Adults" twice his age.
Films that showcase this:
- Jade Fox
- Cunning Kids
- Sleeping Fist
- Thundering Mantis
- Snuff-Bottle Connection
Favorite Student (Fu Sheng)
Some Of The Best:
Fighting Duo (Fu Sheng & Chi Kuan-Chun)

- Shaolin Temple
Gambling Cheat (Fong Kin-Min)
Some Of The Best:
Head Dice Shakers (Maio Tien)
Films that showcase this:
- Furious Slaughter
Kung Fu Chameleon (Samo Hung)
These are the actors who can play just about any role, regardless of what it was. Whether it was under different types of "Make-up", fans couldn't get enough of them. Every time they were seen on the screen, their portrayals always brought something new and exciting to each character they played.
Some Of The Best:
- Lo Lieh
- Chang Yi
- Kao Fei
- Samo Hung
- Tommy Lee
- Chen Sing +
Lackey (Sun Nam)
Some Of The Best:
- Wei Ping-Ao
- Bloody Fists
- Hapikdo
- Thunder Kick
- Bruce, D-Day At Macau
- None But The Brave
- Fist Of The Double K
Money-Hungry Temptress (Hu Chin)
If there was any woman who could make men drool (while taking their money at the same time), it's this woman. Her pretty face and constant smoozing with men always leads to them trying to get her into bed. She's merely using her womanly skills to empty their pockets of everything they own. This always ends with her slapping or scratching their faces in disgust. She would have made an excellent Brothel madame in these films.
Films that showcase this:
- Chinese Mack
- Win Them All
- Chinese Godfather
- Shaolin Red Master
- Green Jade Statuette
Onscreen Buddies (Fong Yeh & San Kuai)

Perenial Teacher (Simon Yuen)
Everyone's favorite kung-fu teacher is this man Simon Yuen (Yuen Hsiao-Tien). His appearance in just about any film that he's starred in can bring out the best in his co-stars. Whenever you hear the words Drunken Master, he is the teacher that comes to mind. His age didn't stand in the way of his superior acting (and antics).
- Drunken Master
- Crystal Fist
- Snake In The Eagle's Shadow
- 6 Directions Of Boxing
- Drunken Arts, Crippled Fists
- Kung Fu Master Named Drunken Cat
King Of Martyrs (Tang Yen-San)
He has died in, virtually, every film he has made.
Some Of The Best:
Martyr (Traditional Kung Fu) (Fu Sheng)
Some Of The Best:
Rapist (Feng Ko-An ?)
Some Of The Best:
- Magnificent Butcher
- Iron-Fisted Monk
Renegade (Chen Kuan-Tai)
If there was ever a guy, who didn't wanna be a part of a gang, it's this guy. He's had more people come after him, than the people, they were initially, out to get. His conscious always seems to get to him and he reaalizes that he's just being used as a pawn, so he rebels against the (evil) system.
Some Of The Best:
Sadist (Chen Shen)
Some Of The Best:
Appears With Naked Women The Most (Chen Shen)
Some Of The Best:
Savior Of Souls (Wang Tao)
Whether it's trying to save a local Prostitue or a helpless female on the road, his heroics seem to cause more trouble than solutions. By just trying to lend a helping-hand, he gets into more fights than anyone else around him. Women always seemed "smitten" by his heroic charm (even when they were supposed to kill him). He is seen trying to save more Prostitutes, than anyone else I've seen. By trying to help them gain their dignity back, he feels that they will lead fuller lives. Yet, most are usually killed or die in the end.
Films that showcase this:
- Eunuch Of The Western Palace
- Challenge Of Death
- Death Duel Of Kung Fu
- Fatal Needles, Fatal Fists
- Bandits, Prostitues, & Silver
Senior Monk (Abbot) (O Yang Man)
Some Of The Best:
Shaolin Monk (Gordon Liu)
When most people think of a Shaolin Monk, this man almost always comes to mind. His performances as a monk in his films, have been some of the most classic moments of the kung-fu genre. And, while he is a gifted actor, whose range of emotions allows him to play just about any part, it the role of a Shaolin monk, that most associate him with.
Films that showcase this:
- Master Killer
- Fists & Guts
- Warrior From Shaolin
- Shaolin Drunken Monk
- Return Of The Master Killer
- Disciples Of The 36th Chamber
Silver Fox (Wang Jang-Li)
When it comes to "Gray-haired" fighters, the first name that comes to mind is, usually, this man. His portrayals are so dynamic and intense, that even if the hero is very skillful, he'll have a hard time trying to "steal the show".
Films that showcase this:
- Secret Rivals 1 & 2
- Eagle's Killer
- Ninja In The Dragon's Den
- 2 Fists Against The Law
- Master Of Tiger & Crane
- Invincible Armour
- Snuff-Bottle Connection
- Dance Of The Drunken Mantis
Waiter ()
Some Of The Best:
Wrongfully Accused (Chen Sing)
Of all kung-fu stars, Chen Sing probably holds the distinction of being "Mr. Wrongfully Accused". A number of his films show him either being carted off to jail or being just released from prison. Yet, during his villain roles, he always ends up in bed with a female he has to kill.
Films that showcase this:
- Black List
- Mantis Combat
- Black Panther
- Gold Snatchers
- The Himalayan
- Kung Fu Executioner
Villain (Wang Jang-Li)
His kicks are some of the best in the business and his face evokes everything Evil, which leads to confrontations where there wouldn't normally be one.

Most Versatile Career (Chen Kuan-Tai)
While most would think Jimmy Wang-Yu (he wasn't keen on playing villainous parts). Chen Kuan-Tai started working as an extra at Independant studios, later floating back-and-forth between Shaw Bros' and their rival Golden Harvest. Eventually, he found a permanent home at Shaw studios, carving out a successful career and becoming one of their most famous stars. Like Jimmy Wang-yu, he later "bucked" the system at Shaw Bros' (he later returned, Wang Yu never did), choosing to make films for much more money with Independant companies.
