The Actors
With the emergence of the film industry, actors, actresses, directors, stuntmen, choreographers, acrobats, and others soon found places within the industry best suited to making a living. To get an adequate understanding of how everyone could work together, think of the film industry as a "College". Within that city, there could be many colleges, each with their own staff and students (performers). These performers make countless films under contract with each company. The more popular the actor becomes, the more "freedom" the actor has to make his own decisions. Other companies interested in the actor, must meet his list of demands in order to acquire his services for their company.
An actor may work for one company throughout his or her career, showing loyalty to the company that gave them their start in the business. Others, looking to branch out or in order to make more money, could seek to work at various companies, choosing those who offer the biggest paycheck for their services. Normally, a company would sign an actor for a number of years (or films) and could get away with this, because the actor may have just started out in the business. Signing with a company like Shaw Brothers or Golden Harvest meant that they had made a giant step, towards becoming a recognizable name in the business.
Shaw Bros' had a "Drama Class" where new recruits could learn the business of acting and have their skills nurtured in such a way that they were (almost) guranteed work after completion. Golden Harvest (and other studios), didn't offer such classes, preferring to deal with those who already had some kind of formal training or a particular skill (i.e., stuntman, etc). Each studio was different (up to a point), but, the main theme was to turn a profit. Hopefully, for the actor, they became famous, in the process.
Film Heroes
