BiographyA favorite of director Chang Cheh's, this emotional actor, whose child-like antics hid his Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. He became the first closed-door student, of the great Liu Chia-Liang and was also his first choice, to star in Liu's directorial debut Spiritual Boxer. This was the film, that many felt, ushered in the start of the Kung-fu Comedy genre. His devotion to director Chang, would be the reason that he had to pass on the film, while (later) regretting it. His International claim to fame was the movie The Chinatown Kid, which also introduced a group of Taiwanese actors who would later become known as the Venoms. It was this movie (partly shot in San Francisco) that he became known as - "Alexander Fu-Sheng" - a name that has stuck, even to this day.
Though he starred in some excellent films, his career was filled with mishaps and accidents. He broke his leg and sustained a head injury, that plagued him for the rest of his life. He died on July 7th, 1983, the result of a car crash. It is said that he inherited the same bad luck as the legendary Bruce Lee, since he reportedly, bought the house that Lee owned at the time of his death. He excelled at Shaw studios and eventually became one of their biggest and brightest stars. Even in death, he has acquired that type of fan base (usually) reserved for icons, and it seems that through his film work, he had almost achieved that status. He had many likable qualities, that seemed to transcend, the characters that he played. He was one of Shaw Brothers most prominent stars and his future seemed even brighter, regardless of the many hardships he had faced. Like Lee, what we saw was a very talented young man whose life was cut short, robbing millions of fans an opportunity to see what his future in films, might have been. He was offered a role that could have eclipsed another up-and-coming star, but Run Run Shaw wouldn't give him permission to do so, because of his contract with Shaw Brothers. The film was Snake In The Eagle's Shadow (which was said to be, written specifically with him in mind) and had he taken the role, he would have accomplished a few things that he always wanted to do. One was to branch off into Comedy (which he seemed to be a natural at) and the other was his own production company.
