Biography
This comedic actor has been around the film world for a long time. He started out at Cathay Films (MP & GI) before moving over to Shaw Bros' as many did in the early 60's. He can be quite entertaining, when he's in top form. In the fight-game, he couldn't break a piece of stale bread with a Sidekick. I think he found that out a long time ago, and that's why he went other route - Comedy. I guess he chose well, because, even in serious roles, he was always making me laugh.
In Boxer From Shantung, he went around stabbing people with a knife (after they were already badly beaten by others). In Warrior Of Steel, Chen Kuan-Tai took his woman and his pride. He should have won an Oscar for his role in the Goose Boxer (with Charles Heung), because outside of being a very funny movie, it was a very entertaining blend of kung-fu and comedy - definitely one of the best. Some have even cited his film The Smiling Swordsman, as being the forerunner of Martial-Arts Comedy, that started the trend at a time when a young Jackie Chan, couldn't even get a job. He played an inept guy, who pretended to be a skilled swordsman and had to save a town from thugs.

That same premise, was later redone in director Liu Chia-Liang's (1975) directorial debut, The Spiritual Boxer, (7) years later. Here, Wong Yu pretended to be skilled in kung-fu and had to save a town from thugs. He even had a minor role in this film as well. He has worked, actively, in (both) Cantonese and Mandarin films, throughout his entire career as an actor. He died in Hong Kong, on June 2, 1993.
