Biography
The first time I saw him, he was in the cult-classic Dragons Never Die (with Hon Kwok-Choi playing his brother), where he displayed pretty good fighting skills and screen-presence. It was (undoubtedly) his best movie to date (and though I've seen him in other films) everything else his done has yet, to equal this. He came out during a time, when everyone was trying to become famous (as a kung-fu star). Though he certainly had potential, stardom was harder for some to gain the others and he was about to find - out the hard way.
This was during Hong Kong's search for the next Bruce Lee. A period where, you were either hungry and you climbed up the ladder of success or you just became another face, in sea of hopefuls. He had one of those Sidekicks, where it looked like he's stomping you in the face. In the The Chinese Tiger, he starred with Li Chin-Kun, who kind of out-classed him in the fighting department. His martial-arts ability could have taken him further than it did. Thunder Fist, was a stepping-stone to other roles -- but others just as skillful as he, begin to appear on the scene. Jobs in the industry weren't scarce, but actors (who were the total package) seemed to be. He appeared in a handful of films and then eventually seemed to vanish (as would most aspiring hopefuls). When all hope ran out, so did a lot of dreams and people begin to see how hard it was, to fill Bruce Lee's shoes. |
