Biography
Though he only went as far as the 3rd-grade, he would go on to become one of Shaw Bros' most famous directors. Born in Anhui Province (China), he is the father of director Cheng Siu-Tung , who also starred in Stroke Of Death and The Master Strikes early in his own career. The elder Cheng went on to become an important figure in the development of Cantonese films in Hong Kong in the 1950s. He was able to draw on his extensive life experience to produce some very exciting scripts. His early adventures would prove to the basis of stories about human emotions and conflicts.
In 1951, he made his debut as a director with Mother and Son In Grief. He would later go on to direct such hits as The Magnificent Swordsman (one of my favorites) and The 14 Amazons. The latter would go on to win numerous awards, including the "Golden Horse" as it surpassed even Chang Cheh's grand scale adventure The Heroic Ones. He would work with director Chang and Yueh Feng on the excellent film Trilogy Of Swordsmanship, which explored (3) seperate stories of honor, chivalry, and intrigue. He directed more than (20) films in the Cantonese, Mandarin or Fukien dialects and scripted more than (60) films in his professional life.
