Biography
Here's another guy who starred in a string of low-budget films, and almost made a name for himself. He actually started out as a Singer, before catching the acting bug and began appearing in films. Known as "Shaking Eagle" -- because of this vicious shaking movement he did (in a few films) when fighting. His career as a kung-fu star was kind of "shaky," itself.
He put in a very good performance in 18 Fatal Strikes with Tung Wei in one of his better showings. In the movie The Cavalier, he also did some decent work, but nothing that would help cement his future in kung-fu films. In One-Foot Crane he was overshadowed by lovely Lily Li and we caught him playing a "Crab Man" in the somewhat silly Fight For Survival (with Polly Shang-Kuan). Obviously, some of the roles that he took, helped to undermine his career as an actor, but he always had his singng career to fall back on. This made me think that he didn't take his acting career, too seriously. Though he had decent skills as a fighter, he wasn't up to par with the Li I-Min's and the Ti Lung's of the world, but then again, who are? In the film The Chinese Stuntman, he almost seemed a worthy opponent for Bruce Li, but even Li's presence seemed to overshadow him. He always seems a bit too stiff, with not much fluid movement (except when he was shaking). He seemed happier to play co-star than star, which (probably) explains why he never rose above the ranks, to full-fledged star. |
