Biography
Another Shaw Brothers veteran who made the jump from Dramatic roles, to those found in kung-fu films. I've never seen him in a fighting role, even when he played a Monk in the classic 36th Chamber Of Shaolin with Gordon Liu; he mostly just walked around reciting his lines. He's played in numerous movies and is a character actor who (in my opinion) has never given that great performance (which means I'll have to watch some of his earlier work). He had a decent role in the film, Village Of Tigers, where he battled the agile Shu Pei-Pei. This was one of the only times that I can recall, where he actuiually, put in some fight-time. He performance wasn't bad, but for all potential purposes, it was just too short.
In all the films I've seen him play in, as an actor, he's not bad, but to be in a kung-fu movie (if you're not fighting), you've got to work a little harder than most, to get noticed. In the film Master Of Kung Fu, he played one of a group of men, falsely accused of a crime and before he could put in any kind of performance, they had killed him off. He fared much better in earlier films from Shaw Bros' where acting was (mostly) called for. In these films, his personna was about the same as in kung-fu films (except, with no fighting) so his skill as an actor really stood out. He had a lengthy career with Shaw studios and Independent film companies as well. The last film I recall seeing him in, was Operation Scorpio with Liu Chia-Liang.
