Biography
To Americans, he was known as one of the first villain, in a kung-fu film. This was because 5 Fingers Of Death, was the first kung-fu film released in the states. Yet, that didn't stop him from achieving fame, during the kung-fu craze of the 70's. He drove me crazy, by constantly running his fingers through his hair, but, he didn't let us down when it came to being ruthless. His viciousness, seemed to have been a part of his early career.
He gained some big points with kung-fu fanatics when he proceeded to snatch the eyes out of Nan Kung-Hsun, (and then dropped them on the floor in front of him). American audiences, had never seen anything like that on the screen before and this was just the start of the genre. He seemed more suited for the criminal-type films he starred in like, The Tea House and its sequel Big Brother Chang both starring Chen Kuan-Tai.
You got to like his style, constantly trying to bump off the competition so he can win a tournament (we would see this re-enacted again in Sonny Chiba's film Dragon Princess). In the end fight scene with Lo Lieh's hands started glowing, he looked like he was going to have a heart attack. As far as kung-fu movies go, he never came close to achieving the recognition he received in 5 Fingers Of Death.
He wasn't just another flash-in-the-pan when it came to acting, as he has starred in numerous films. Yet, films like Thunderbolt Fist, Kung Fu Hellcats, and The Imposter (starring David Chiang), gave his career much needed career boost here in the States. He would (later) work with famed director, King Hu, on such films as Raining In The Mountains and Legend Of The Mountains.
