Kung Fu Savior
During a period after Bruce Lee's death (and when Jackie Chan was in a rut making movies), this guy, was a sight for sore eyes. With style and charisma, the handful of movies that he did make elevated him to cult-status. Long before the Yuen Woo-Ping, had Jet Li playing a "Kung-fu Puppet" -- they were working with the kid from Indonesia, with the fast hands and dynamic kicks. His movies were a mixed blend of kung-fu comedy, but not to the extent of over-playing it (a la Jackie Chan-style).
During a period when people were not looking for another Bruce Lee imitator, he came along and gave us comparisons anyway, without even trying. Skilled in martial-arts, and just as ample with weapons, he made quite an impression on fans when he hit the big screen. He was said to have auditioned for the Once Upon A Time In China-4 (and was turned down), something I find hard to believe. We can only imagine, what Wong Fei-Hong would have looked like, without strings.
Each of his films provided us with something new (and something to look forward to), each capitalizing on his excellent skills and agility. Poised to make a comeback and said to be still making movies in his homeland of Indonesia (mostly dramas with a few fighting scenes). Though he still looks to be in fighting shape, I don't think he'll be coming back, because (1) he's still very popular in him homeland (2) coming from wealth, he probably doesn't need to money, and (3) if he were coming back, he would have done it by now, so it's a safe bet that he won't.
As with most who were stars or in the limelight, it takes a lot more than just desire, to make a comeback. Most feel they have what it takes, yet, the market is fickle and what was in vogue years ago, people have a hard time trying to adjust to someone they may have only "heard" of, or have not seen in action in about (20) years. But, the films he's given us so far have kept his prowess something to talk about for years to come and to many die-hard fans, he's still somewhat of a cult figure. And, to anyone who has seen his work on film know, we'll still be talking about him years from now. As they say - Charisma, never goes out of style.
