The Lord Of The Legs
By the time he appeared on the scene, Kung-fu films were in a state of transition. Outside of the late Bruce Lee and Tan Tao-Liang, audiences hadn't seen high kicks or fancy legwork. Discovered by director Ng See-Yuen (right after Bruce Liang), he would go on to become an integral part of the director's film group. First appearing in Bruce Lee's Secret, where he took on both Bruce Li and Carter Wong. In his first film, we could tell that there was something unique about him, but it was his second film, that would that let us see, that he had a long career ahead of him.
That film was The Secret Rivals, and it set the stage for the "2-on-1" fight-scenes and the beautiful backdrops of Korea. This film also had another Ng See-Yuen discovery, John Liu, who would go on to share some of the genre's best battles against Wang Jang-Li. Films such as Secret Rivals 1 & 2, Snuff-Bottle Connection, Invincible Armour, and Instant Kung Fu Man -- while it did great things for both men, it help Wang to become (possibly) the great onscreen villain ever. His dexterity and amazing legwork, have left fans in awe for years. Almost each major Independant kung-fu classic after (1974) featured his fancy footwork. [ 36 Most Influential ] |
