One of the best storytellers in the business, he received first notice with the release of the film Devil's Mirror for Shaw studios. His films, like those of director Chang Cheh, also dealt with "Honor and Chivalry". He usually shot Martial-arts or Crime dramas and always sored hits in both genres. The film Drug Connection was a big hit and was a remake of sorts from the "Blaxploitation" classic Coffy with Pam Grier.

He also gave Ti Lung and Fu Sheng some of their better roles, pairing them up in (2) excellent vehicles - Deadly Breaking Sword and the cult-classic Avenging Eagle. Other clasics by him were The Kung Fu Instructor, My Rebellious Son, Judegement of the Assassin, and To Kill a Mastermind with Wang Lung-Wei. A master of the "Long-shot" (wide view), his actors usually look small compared to the background their up against some times, as in A Fists Full of Talons and the beautiful backdrop of the giant lying Buddha.

Other films by him have also captured some of his insight and have gone on to be perennial favorites among fans - The Proud Youth, Human Skin Lanterns, and Kid with a Tattoo starring Wong Yu. Back in the 70's he once said, that if he could make $2,500 a month, doing something else, that he would have quit the business. It's obvious that we were fortunate to have his keen eye and excellent storytelling abilities to bring us some every "Emotionally Charged" performances. Yet, few could match the film The Master Strikes Back, when Ti Lung gets his son back after complying with orders from the Magistrate. Excellent film.
