Born in 1936 in Nanjing and moved to Taiwan in 1949. After graduation, he worked as a technician and eventually as an assistant cinematographer and cinematographer on many films. In 1966 Shaw director Lo Chen had him work as cinematographer on the film To Late for Love, he's also worked on Golden Swallow, Bells of Death, The 3 Smiles, and The Golden Knight. He moved to Hong Kong in 1967 and formally started working at Shaw studios.
He made his directorial debut in 1970 and had worked on many collaborations with director Chang Cheh and Wu Ma. Films such as Iron Bodyguard, All Men Are Brothers, The Pirate, and Boxer from Shantung, where he would forge a life-long friendship with actor Chen Kuan-Tai, who has appeared in many of the films directed by him. In 1977, with his wife Chin Shu-Mei (a scriptwriter), he formed his own production company in Taiwan. Earlier in his career, they had worked together on the film Oath of Death.
Some of his best works were Shadow Boxer, Blooded Treasury Fight, The Imposter, Heroes of the Underground, and Finger of Doom. He's worked with some of the best actors of the genre and has made consistantly good films. While most of his later works were shot in Taiwan, he still managed to make some very popular films and even gave actress Chang Ling one of her biggest hits - Witty Hand, Witty Sword. Like director Lee Tso-Nam, his films concentrated more on fighting, with virtually no Comedy added to slow up the pace.
