Born in 1943 in Northern China, his family fled to Taiwan in 1949 and he grew up in Taipei. He became interested in filmmaking and would eventually end up working with director
Ting Shan-Si as his assistant director on such films as Furious Slaughter and Whiplash. He, too, has worked at Shaw Bros', his first film was called The Escaper, followed by Crazy Nuts of Kung Fu. I like him because of his "No-nonsense" approach to filmmaking. He doesn't spend a great deal of time on Comedy in his films (practically none), so the flow of the fighting in his films remains consistant.
Obscure films like Man Beyond Horizon and Kung Fu vs Godfather are examples of his work that have eluded many collectors of his films. He's made a star out of
Wang Tao (his favorite actor to work with) when he starred them in the film The Hot, The Cool, & The Vicious. He was teamed up with
Tan Tao-Liang and Lee's main Choreographer (
Tommy Lee) for one of the most popular films of the 70's. He did it again, casting the trio in Challenge of Death, this time adding actor
Chang Yi as the villain who was a master of the "Spider-Fist" technique.
He has made some excellent films and fans seem to have loved his work on such classics as Green Jade Statuette, Eagle's Claws, Shaolin Invincible Sticks, and my personal favorite Fatal Needles, Fatal Fists. Even some of his later films never strayed away from his winning formula for success. Films like Fist of Fury 2, Tattoo Connection, and Challenge of the Lady Ninjas kept most hardcore fans happy, yet wanting more. With the release of Woman Avenger and The Leg Fighters, he made a star out of the limber
Hsia Kuang-Li, while Shaolin vs Lama was one of the most action-packed films (and his first that dealt with Shaolin) in he slew of movies. He's still making films today with his latest one entitled Internet Disaster.
My Favorite Films:
- Woman Avenger
- Green Jade Statuette
- Challenge of Death
- 10th Dan Master
- Fatal Needles, Fatal Fists
- The Hot, The Cool, & The Vicious
