One of my favorite directors, he was a trendsetter when he started of his career in Taiwan. In 1970, he would sign with Shaw Brothers studios and go on to direct Mission Impossible and The Mighty One before leaving the studio. A martial-arts visionary, he would unknowingly "raise-the-bar" when he directed the classic 18 Bronzemen. The scenes that he filmed showing the training rituals of the Shaolin Temple have become synonymous with the kung-fu films (and fans) around the world.
This was done almost 2-years before
Liu Chia-Liang shot 36th Chambers of Shaolin and took it a step further making the training sequences almost half the movie.
Not only did he help the careers of
Carter Wong,
Polly Shang-Kuan,
Chang Yi, and
Tien Peng. but
Barry Chan,
Yi Yuen,
Li I-Min,
Mark Long, and
Jack Long as well. He even had his own film company "Hong Hwa", which put out (and Produced) a number of excellent films. Some of the films with his name attched to them have also become classics themselves like - 7 Grandmasters, Mystery of Chess-Boxing, Dragons Claws, Born Invincible, Return of th 18 Bronzemen, and World of the Drunken Master have all appeared of most fans favorites list.
My Favorite Films:
- 18 Bronzemen 2
- Blazing Temple
- 7 Grandmasters
- Born Invincible
- Dragon's Claws
- Shaolin Kung Fu
- Mystery of Chess-Boxing
