Often overlooked by most film historians, he had a wonderful run in the early '70s and was responsible for discovering
Angela Mao and making her a Superstar. Though, he had a short run at Shaw Bros', his film Crimson Charm was very good. He left the studio with
Raymond Chow,
Lo Wei,
Leonard Ho, and a number of "Up-and-coming" actors in 1970 and went to Golden Harvest studios.
Born in Anhui Province (China) in 1919, he started in the film business as an actor and a scriptwriter. Not only did he discover
Carter Wong, but he had a hand in of helping Golden Harvest establish itself with well crafted films. He actually shot their first film Angry River and numerous others like Lady Kung Fu, Shaolin Plot (his biggest hit), Deep Thrust, and When Tae Kwon Do Strikes just to name a few. Known for writing his own scripts, he was a major asset to Golden Harvest when they started, even teaching
Samo Hung the trade (he wrote Iron-Fisted Monk for him).
My Favorite Films:
- Hapkido
- Shaolin Plot
- The Himilayan
- The Tournament
- When Tae Kwon Do Strikes
- Naked Comes the Huntress
