Born in Shanghi in 1942, he graduated from the Shanghi Film Institute. He joined Shaw Bros' in 1963 as the assistant photographer for Nishimoto Tadashi (Ho Lan-Sha) and was promoted to Cinematographer in 1968. He worked on varous films including Winged Tiger and later on Jimmy Wang-Yu's Chinese Boxer. He made his debut with the film From the Underworld in 1974, before returning to Shaw studios where he directed Super Inframan, The Brotherhood, and episodes of the series The Criminal working with such directors as Sun Chung and Kuei Shih-Hung.

His films ranged from the intriguing (Portrait in Crystal, Flying Guillotine 2) to the "Over-the-top" (Super Inframan). The film Soul of the Sword was an excellent film by him and I was thoroughly surprised as it seemed like most of the other swordplay films from Chu Yuan. While his film Usurphers of the Emperor's Power could have easily been made by "actor-turned-director" Lu Chin-Ku, with it's "fast-paced-don't-blink" action. He was an interesting storyteller as most of his films tend to draw you in until the last frame of film is shown.
