Born in Canton, China in 1923, he grew up and was educated in Shanghai. Working at Shaw Bros', he made his directorial debut with An Appointment After Dark in 1957, and later directed the satire film The Monkey Goes West, a version of the Chinese classic literature "Journey to the West". In 1967, he directed the highly successful melodrama Susanna, which helped to make a star out of actress Li Ching. It not only won the "Best Film Award" at the 14th Asian Film Festival but also received the "Honorable Mention" for Dramatic Feature at the 7th Golden Horse Awards.

One of my favorite directors, I'm eagerly awaiting to release of such remastered works as Dragon Missile and Vengeful Beauty (2) of the most hard-to-find films by him. He went on to directed over 80 films, some of his most popular were Till Clouds Roll By, Black Enforcer, Shaolin Abbot, Shaoiln Handlock, Flying Guillotine, Jade Raksha, and Black Magic. He retired after completing his last project for Shaw Brothers, the martial-arts film The Swift Sword.
