One of Shaw Bros' leading actresses, she was nicknamed "Baby Movie Queen" after winning "Best Actress" honors at the 12th Asian Film exhibition in 1965 at age (17). She held the distinction of being the youngest recipient to win the Golden Horse Award (Oscar). She starred in countless Drama's as Shaw Bros' and during her heyday; she was their #1 film actress. Though a dramatic actress, when she began appearing in "Swordplay" films, it was like she almost belonged in them. Though no serious competition to
Cheng Pei-Pei (in Swordplay films, that is), she made her mark just the same appearing in some excellent films along side some of Shaw Bros' leading men.
She appeared with
Jimmy Wang-Yu (Sword of Swords),
Tang Ching (Killers 5), and her frequent co-star
Ti Lung (King Eagle), where she portrayed Twin sisters, one Good and one Evil, in one of her most challenging roles. The film "Sword of Swords" was her first film after severely injuring her leg on the set of the film "Killers 5". She received countless cards and letters from fans all over the world wishing her a speedy recovery. This, alone, showed the magnitude and depth of which she was revered during the 60's and early 70's. She was also a prominent face of hundreds of magazine covers throughout the Orient.
She along with
Li-Li Hua and
Ivy Ling-Po are seemingly in a class by themselves. Yet, of these (3) actresses, she is the only one who successfully made the transition to swordplay films. She, like most actresses, also found success playing in Modern films, she had her own "Fan Club", and years later, tried her hand at producing films. Probably, the best-known film she helped to produce was Snake's Deadly Act starring
Wilson Tong.
